Each month we hold a trial where a coach will assess if the swimmer is right for the club, the main areas that will be assessed are
1. Stroke technique
2. Level and experience
3. Water skills / competitive skills
We take swimmers on from ages 4 and above. If you are a Masters swimmer we will arrange a session for you to come and drop into, rather than a trial.
On the day of the Trial please come onto poolside with your swimmer, and wait by the small pool area. Trials will only take a short time, and swimmers may be given the option to try out there new group on the day if they wish, this is optional.

Sunday 29th March 2020
Sunday 26th April 2020

New Swimmer Information
Welcome to Matlock
After your trial you will be given a group. All group times and levels are found here.
Before you start swimming you will need to complete the following forms
- Membership form – please read carefully
- ASA Membership (yearly) this is a yearly amount to be part of the swimming governing body.
- You will need to set up a standing order with your bank for the monthly payment.
- Membership can be cancelled at any time, but if you decided to leave the club please inform the coaches.
You must return the memberships forms to Mr Bowler or pass to the coaches or teacher.
Swimmers need a Matlock Hat costing £5.00 and can be bought from the coaches or the club swim shop.
Swimmers simply join in the program, it generally takes about 2 weeks for the swimmer to settle into the group and get to know other swimmers and coaches, if swimmers struggle at the start with training loads, this is not a problem, coaches will adapt the sessions for them.
After the 2 week period most swimmers will be expected to fit in and meet the demands of the group. Swimmers progress will be reviewed on a continual basis.
Main Pool Swimmers
Matlock encourages swimmers to be competitive and embrace competitions, however we understand this isn’t for everyone, and it doesn’t mean your experiences within training will be different from anyone else’s. However training will be programmed around those that are racing and training will be linked with the competition calendars. Matlock is a place for everyone, the more we know about you, the more we can help training suit you. If you do other sports, by all means pass on your goals and events to your main coach.
For swimmers joining the lower end of the club, the focus is clearly on enjoyment and fun. We believe swimmers learn most when they are themselves, swimmers are asked to respect the teachers and listen to instruction, while enjoying the relaxed happy swimming environment. Any young swimmers wanting feedback on progress or to discuss any issues, please come on poolside and ask for a minute with the teacher, you may need to wait until they have finished teaching. For anything more serious or where a longer time requirement, then speak and organize a time with the teacher or email Mr Bowler who will forward your email to Diane Lee – (also see How to Contact you).
We welcome all into Matlock swimming, and if we can accommodate disability swimmers into the club we will to our up most to integrate swimmers fully. If swimmers have hidden disabilities such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHA, Autism, OCD etc please make sure coaches are aware of this.
